How to stop doom scrolling to ‘relax’ (And what to do instead!)

Well, I am not going to be that annoying person who tells you "scrolling on social media is not the best thing you could be doing for your well-being" because like....yes thank you we are all aware!

The problem is we don't know what else do it to help us relax.

Doom scrolling is filling a need. Your mind has been go go go all day and wants some down time.

So you sit on your sofa, maybe lay on your bed, and it kinda sort feels like rest. I mean you are physically resting after all right?

But after 30mins (oooorr maybe more like an hour 😵‍💫) you don't feel better at all. In fact you feel worse.

Now you feel guilt for wasting time, you've seen the amazing holiday Sara is on and you're not, so feel compairsonitus (officially a real word) kicking in and you're more on edge than when you got home.

Now, we aren't just going to tell ourselves to 'stop doom scrolling'.

Instead? We are going to find a way to give your mind what it actually needs.

It needs to be guided, breath by breath, moment by moment, to a place of rest.

We can't push our brain through the day, making it think, do, problem solve, work non stop then in the evening get on with chores and dinner etc etc etc and then somehow magically expect it to be ready to switch off when our head hits the pillow.

I mean that just isn't fair, your poor mind! It can't suddenly stop.

So we don't ask it too.

Instead we set aside just a little bit of time each evening to guide it to a place of calm, safety and rest.

A little pocket of time just for us, to connect with our inner world, and start to slow everything down so we are ready for deep, nourishing sleep.

Below I share with you simple ways you can create you very own relaxing ritual to do just that.

How to create a evening wind down routine

Step 1- Do ONE thing to make your enviroment more calm & relaxing.

🛏 Quick tidy of your bedroom

👚 Get changed into some comfy clothes

🕯 Light a candle and spritz a calming room spray

Step 2- Do something to bring calm and safety to your inner world

This might be breath work, mindfulness, yin yoga or it might be something total personal to you! Knitting, colouring, crafting, being in nature.

Step 3- Let go of the day

If you don’t process the day before your head hits the pillow? Your mind is going to struggle to let go. Overthinking, whirring thoughts and feeling wired are going to make it super hard to feel calm enough to sleep.

Journalling is a great way to get everything in your mind, out. It helps you process your emotions and feelings, externalise them and work through them so they don’t whir around in your mind and can be a great way to focus your mind on the positives of the day if you sprinkle some gratitude in there!

Use these 3 simple steps to create a nourishing wind down…

And in no time you’ll find it so much easier to put down your phone and give your mind the mental rest it needs. You’ll get a restful deep sleep, wake up feeling refreshed and have the energy you need to do more of what brings you joy and matters to you most!
